Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. How often should you change your oil? A. You should read your car's owner's manual. The rule of thumb is every 3,000 miles or 3 month. Q. When should you replace your tires? A. The old trick of using a penny as a gauge is fine for ideal road conditions. (You want the top of Lincoln's head to be obscured when placed in the tread.) The worst the weather conditions, rain and show, the more tread you need. Q. When should I rotate my tires? A. Every 7,500 miles Q. When should I replace my windshield wipers? A. You should replace your wipers every fall and add windshield wiper fluid when necessary. If you live in temperatures that get below freezing, you should use a fluid that is formulated not to freeze. Q. Should I have my air filter replaced? If so, when? A. Your air filter should be checked when you change your oil. Q. Does my car need antifreeze? When should I add it? A. Yes, when necessary and replace every 3 years. Q. How do I know when to replace my battery? A. Your battery should come with a warranty. If you think that your battery is not charging properly, you can take it back to where you purchased it and have it tested. Q. When should I replace my shock absorbers and struts? A. Most manufacturers recommend inspecting and or replacing shocks and struts every 60,000 miles. Q. When should I replace my brake pads/brakes? A. Some brake pads will begin to squeal when they have reached their maximum wear. However, experts recommend that you should have the pads replaced when you have worn them down to 2mm. Q. How often should I replace my spark plug wires? A. Many of the performance shops recommend you change them every 30-50K miles. You should check your owner's manual for the wire's resistance. The general rule of thumb is that the wire's resistance should be around 12kOhms per foot, and not more than 50KOhms/foot. Check also for the specific values in the car manual. Q. Does the make of care determine the type of antifreeze? A. Yes, check your owner's manual. Click here to view a chart to help you decide what type of antifreeze. This chart was furnished by Zerex, but we advise you to follow your owner's manual. |
